Alberta’s energy industry is a critical economic driver for all of Canada and the ASC is proud of its expertise regarding disclosure of oil and gas activities. In many cases the industry is supplementing its important traditional activities with alternative energy and cleantech initiatives. The industry has also shown considerable leadership in responding to investor interest in environmental social and governance (ESG) matters. While maintaining its leadership role within the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), in oversight of oil and gas disclosure under National Instrument 51-101 Standards of Disclosure for Oil and Gas Activities (NI 51-101) the ASC is expanding its focus to ‘all things energy’ including matters relating to infrastructure, services, carbon capture and storage, energy minerals, helium, hydrogen, clean technologies, renewables. We are taking steps to ensure that we have the necessary technical expertise not just in the oil and gas sector but in alternative energy sources and energy related technological developments. Further, as reporting issuers are increasingly providing technical ESG disclosure such as scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse emissions, we are ensuring we have the expertise to assess that disclosure.
Our Energy Group is a specialized team within the ASC’s Corporate Finance division that is comprised of experienced and knowledgeable engineers, geologists and other professionals who understand the industry and its challenges.
